Get This - We're Getting Sued!

The Conservative government is mounting a legal challenge against the Liberal Party of Canada to reclaim some of the money funnelled to the party through the federal sponsorship program, according to La Presse.

The Montreal newspaper reported Thursday that the Tories are preparing to take the Liberals to court to recoup "all the dirty money," according to an unnamed source quoted in the story.
The Liberals have already paid back $1.14 million that the party admits was diverted from the sponsorship program.

According to a La Presse source in Ottawa, however, the Conservatives have directed lawyers to look into launching a civil lawsuit for the money that is still outstanding, "we have not forgotten the $40 million in the sponsorship scandal that's missing,'' an unnamed Tory strategist told La Presse.

*** P.S. I know the picture is sort of unrelated, but I found it today and laughed my ass off. For those of you who don't speak French, it says: "And if only you could do everything that George Bush did in four years" and at the bottome, it says "Steph: All Powerful ("all powerful" is also a nickname for God).

The Tories will milk this for all its worth. Once the lawsuit starts they will drag it out for as long as they can. And veery time HArper dips in the polls you can expect leaks of information to the media to heat up the adscam story again.

Hypothetically, how big would the loss have to be for it to bankrupt the party?

Pedro McKenna and Mannley know that Adscam is only the tip of the iceberg, which is why the Liberals were so desperate to hang on to government to avoid previously undiscovered corruption. Two months ago the proposed Whistleblower Commissioner Allan Cutler stated in a CTV interview that prior to implementation the Accountability act already six senior bureaucrats from six different departments have been in consultation with him privately. The civil case is being pursued to discover where the missing millions went by dragging the politicians into court under oath and following the money. The Liberal party did a very good job of isolating the damage by sacrificing Guite and a couple of admen and hacks, but under the threat of criminal or civil charges someone is bound to crack and cut a deal. Once the dam bursts it will become a tidal wave. The firings of Pelltier and Oulette are going to court, the two billion dollar helicopter procurement fix is about to go, with many more to follow. The Auditor General is about to delve into the Crown Corporations, the technology partnership program, and the "pay it forward" trust accounts amongst others but now with legal authority to follow the money to the end into the private sector. Now the granddaddies of them all for slush funds and corruption; the foreign aid agency and the export development agency will finally be audited.

I must apologize for the longwinded comment and the poor spelling as I am in a bit of a rush today.

Huh? Funny, you'd think smear like that would have landed on the front pages... unless, maybe its bullshit?

Robert I will never smear anyone for three reasons: the liable laws in Canada, it never holds up to intellectual scrutiny, and it is not an honest thing to do. I am a small c conservative and have that bias, however; I really don't have a dog in this fight as Harper has produced a retail liberal budget which must make even his stomach churn in the middle of the night.

The analysis and the predictions I have made in the comments sections are what they are. Take the predictions point by point and factually and intellectually tear them apart. Take my assumptions of why all the leading lights in the Liberal party are not running for the leadership and dispute the my theory. Calling bullshit does not make it so until you step in it.

Of course they are going to sue the Liberals. How are they going to keep the sponsorship program in the news? They will have the trial begin, and once they get testimony that pushes them up in the polls, they call an election. Politcal opportunism at its best.
"Of course what are they going to do when Iggymania runs wild on you".

Pedro I believe that you are backing the right horse and the only one with a chance of beating Harper four to six years from now. However; you and your colleagues must prepare themselves for the bare knuckle pounding you are about to take as the scandals erupt.

l,

I totally know what you mean. I'm scared.

The good thing about Iggs is that he is completely unrelated to this scandal plus he has no real ties to Martin or Chretien.

The fact that Iggs has such a charismatic and graceful presence, I don't think any other scandals from the past that might surface will stick to him.

I could be proven wrong on this, but it smacks of cynical desperation to me on the part of the Tories to drag the Liberals through the muck and drain their already diminished coffers in the process by forcing them to mount an expensive legal defense. If the plaintiff is to be the Government of Canada, then as Liberals, you’ll be paying for both the prosecution AND the defense. Now isn’t that special?

Red Tory you live in Victoria and are much closer to the Basi boy incident than I am here in White Rock. Do you think they will cop a plea to avoid dragging all the other federal Liberals into court or will they drag the whole thing out and fight it to the bitter end?

if the Basi boys think they are looking at jail time they will squeal like stuck pigs and they really know where Martin et al have buried the skeletons.

It wil be terrible for the party.
